Chemical peel benefits

Chemical peels effectively treat a wide range of concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne, enlarged pores, skin laxity, discoloration, scarring (and acne scarring), and other textural issues. In addition, these non-invasive treatments are completely customizable, with the ability to focus on specific issues with peels of varying strength. Chemical peels can treat the face, neck, and hands.

Versatile treatment to fit your needs

Chemical peels span a huge range of potencies. Some peels are painless, with no downtime, yet refresh skin by exfoliating dead cells gently over several days. Peels may not sound as “exciting” as lasers, but, in truth, can be more flexible in that they can be feathered and blended more readily, and many can be used on skin types, such as Asian or African American, that would not be treatable with most lasers.

The procedure

The chemical peel procedure is fast and straightforward. When you arrive at our office for treatment, your esthetician will cleanse your skin. Depending on the strength of your chemical peel, you may also receive local anesthesia.

Once your skin is prepped, your specialist will apply the chemical peel solution to the target area using a brush, sponge, or cotton applicator. You may experience stinging while the peel takes effect. The solution will be allowed to sit for a period of time before being removed with a neutralizing wash. For deeper peels, your specialist may apply a dressing to your skin. Chemical peel treatment typically takes about 30 minutes.

Chemical Peel Recovery and results

You will recover at home after your chemical peel. Recovery time varies depending on the potency of your peel. Light peels involve a recovery time of just a few days, while recovery from deeper peels can take a couple of weeks.

Your skin will be red and irritated following your treatment. Medium and deep peels will also cause swelling and discomfort. You can reduce pain using painkillers and ice. Deeper peels may involve special care instructions, which we will provide to you based on your personalized treatment.

During your recovery, your treated skin will gradually peel away to reveal bright, smooth skin beneath. Lighter peels may only flake or may show no obvious peeling. This is especially common on healthy, well-exfoliated skin. Do not worry - the peel is still effective, and the lack of dead skin peeling away is simply a testament to your existing routine’s effectiveness.

It is imperative that you do not pick at your skin as it peels. You should avoid sun exposure and any contaminants that could lead to complications. The results from your chemical peel can last anywhere from weeks to months, depending on the depth of your peel.

Chemical Peels
Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks and side effects?

The risks and side effects of chemical peels are generally more significant with deeper peels. However, chemical peels are a popular skin rejuvenation option due to their ability to produce consistently impressive results and their overall tolerability. The most common side effects of chemical peel treatment are redness, swelling, and scabbing. These conditions are normal and usually part of the peeling process.

Hyperpigmentation is the most common temporary complication, and most commonly occurs if the skin is subjected to heat and/or sun in the few weeks before or after the peel event. Other possible complications include infection, scarring, and hypopigmentation. However, these complications are rare.

Am I a candidate for Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are usually a good treatment option for patients who are healthy overall and who would like to improve the appearance and texture of the skin on their face, neck, or hands. However, some conditions may prevent some patients from receiving this treatment.

Patients who are taking Accutane/Amnesteem (isotretinoin) may not be candidates or may need to discontinue their medication six months before their chemical peel. Patients who are prone to keloids or cold sores may also be advised against chemical peels or may need additional care. Patients who are pregnant should postpone their chemical peel.
